U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed over 9,500 government employees since taking office for a second term, aiming to reduce federal spending. According to a Reuters report on Saturday (February 15), the layoffs span multiple government sectors, including interior affairs, energy, veteran affairs, agriculture, healthcare, and social services.
Shortly after his inauguration on January 20, Trump established a new department named “Government Cost Reduction and Workforce Efficiency,” appointing Tesla founder Elon Musk as its head. However, due to the lack of congressional approval, the department has yet to receive ministerial status, leaving Musk in an advisory role.
The layoffs began on the day of Trump’s inauguration and have continued under Musk’s supervision. Reports suggest that over 1,000 additional employees from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will receive termination notices next week.
This large-scale downsizing is expected to have significant political and economic implications as Trump pushes forward with his cost-cutting agenda.
