Not Our Duty Time, Says Fire Service After Sherpur Flood Rescue Plea Ignored

As Sherpur’s Jhenaigati region faces catastrophic flooding, a growing number of residents are questioning the Fire Service’s response, or lack thereof. Last evening, desperate pleas for assistance in rescuing flood-trapped residents—including pregnant women, children, and the elderly—went unanswered by the Fire Service, who reportedly declined, stating it was “outside duty hours.”

This unexpected refusal has sparked outrage among locals. “We thought the Fire Service was available 24/7 for emergencies, but they told us after 6 PM it wasn’t their duty time,” said one resident. Volunteers were forced to take over rescue operations in the dangerous, waterlogged areas with no power and limited resources. They risked their own lives to save others as night fell, leaving many to wonder why the Fire Service did not step in during this critical time.

Civil defense officials reiterated that rescue operations were halted due to a lack of formal obligation outside of designated working hours. However, this response has stirred public frustration, especially as people believe that in times of crisis, emergency services should extend beyond such constraints.

Hundreds of villages in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari remain submerged by the recent hill torrent floods. Over 10,000 people are still in need of rescue and relief, with volunteers and locals doing everything they can to help.

Note: Urgent relief, including dry food and clean drinking water, is needed for those still stranded. Local authorities are urging citizens to come together to assist in the ongoing crisis.
