Toronto, Canada – Shamit Shome, a Canada-based footballer of Bangladeshi origin, drew widespread attention after wearing a jersey featuring the Bangladesh flag during a recent Canadian Premier League match for Cavalry FC.
Earlier this month, Shome made his international debut for Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Singapore. Following his national team appearance, he returned to Canada and was back in action last night, playing for Cavalry FC.
Cavalry FC posted a team photo on their official social media accounts, including Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), featuring 11 players. In the image, Shome can be seen proudly wearing a jersey that displays the Bangladeshi flag. The caption highlighted the team’s cultural diversity by including flag emojis of 10 countries: Bangladesh, United Kingdom (twice), Somalia, Germany, Jamaica, Poland, Italy, Colombia, New Zealand, and Belgium.
The post quickly attracted enthusiastic responses from Bangladeshi fans. Many expressed their excitement and pride, with one commenter calling him, “Our tiger, Shamit Shome.” The comment section saw an active presence of Bangladeshi supporters cheering for him.
In the match, Cavalry FC played to a 1–1 draw against Wanderers FC. Caniggia Elva scored for Cavalry, while Thiago Coimbra netted for the opposition. Shome started in the match and played 68 minutes, performing confidently in his role as an attacking midfielder.
With this result, Cavalry FC holds second place in the league standings with 18 points from 10 matches, just behind Atlético Ottawa, who lead the table with 21 points.
