Mandatory Pen Use in IELTS Exams: Effective from January

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS), widely used to assess English proficiency for academic and immigration purposes, is undergoing a significant change in Bangladesh. The British Council and IDP Education, the official organizers of IELTS in the country, announced that from January 25, 2025, candidates must use pens instead of pencils in all modules: Listening, Reading, and Writing.

Previously, pencils were mandatory for Listening and Reading, with an option to choose between pen or pencil for Writing. Under the new regulation, only pens will be allowed, and candidates will no longer be permitted to bring pencils, erasers, or sharpeners to the exam center. The required pens will be provided by the exam organizers.

Elora Shahab Shormi, Head of IDP IELTS, explained that this decision aims to enhance transparency and convenience for candidates. “Using pens eliminates the need for erasers and sharpeners, saving valuable time that candidates can use to focus on their answers. Pens are also more aligned with everyday professional and academic practices,” she said.

Zubair Naeem, Marketing Manager at the British Council, echoed this sentiment, adding, “This rule simplifies the process for candidates by reducing the items they need to bring. It ensures a smoother and faster testing experience.”

The change will apply to both Academic and General Training IELTS tests in Bangladesh.
