Meta Deletes Trans and Nonbinary Messenger Themes

Meta Delete Trans Theme

This week, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, made a controversial decision to remove trans and nonbinary themes from its Messenger app. These themes, inspired by the trans pride and nonbinary pride flags, were introduced in 2021 and 2022 to celebrate inclusivity during Pride Month.

The removal coincides with Meta’s policy changes allowing users to label LGBTQ+ individuals as “mentally ill,” a decision that has sparked outrage and internal protests at the tech giant. Employees describe the atmosphere within Meta as “total chaos,” as many voice opposition to the apparent shift toward more conservative ideologies under the looming influence of Donald Trump’s administration.

Previously highlighted in blog posts showcasing Meta’s commitment to the LGBTQ+ community, the themes have not only been deleted but also erased from Meta’s public archives. This move has drawn criticism for undermining the company’s once-celebrated stance on inclusivity and diversity.

Meta has yet to respond to queries about the rationale behind this decision, leaving both employees and users questioning the company’s commitment to supporting marginalized communities.
