Liverpool FC has decided to pay out the full remaining value of Diogo Jota’s contract to his family, following the tragic death of the forward in a car accident earlier this week.
According to Portuguese news outlet Record, the Premier League club will honor the two remaining years of Jota’s contract—signed in August 2022—by ensuring financial support goes directly to his grieving family.
The 27-year-old footballer died in the early hours of Thursday morning in a car crash in northwest Spain, along with his brother, Andre Silva. The tragedy has sent shockwaves across the global football community.
Jota had only recently married his long-time partner, Rute, on June 22. The couple shared three children, all born in Liverpool during his time at the club. Since the accident, thousands of fans have gathered at Anfield to leave flowers, scarves, and personal tributes.
Liverpool have opened a book of condolence at Anfield, inviting supporters and members of the public to pay their respects. Club executives Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes released a joint statement expressing their sorrow and reaffirming their support to Jota’s family.
“There is nothing that we can say in this moment to ease the pain of such a devastating tragedy,” they said. “In such heartbreaking circumstances, it is our responsibility to acknowledge the collective grief we are experiencing, to pay tribute to our Diogo, and to offer unwavering support to his family who remain our absolute priority at this time.”
The funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva is scheduled to take place on Saturday in Portugal.
Liverpool’s gesture reflects not only the club’s high regard for the player but also its enduring values of solidarity, compassion, and humanity in the face of unimaginable loss.
