Students from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) are addressing plastic pollution through their project “PENTABLE,” which converts discarded plastic into durable furniture. The initiative began as a simple idea during a late-night chat and has since gained recognition, securing a top-eight spot at the Hult Prize 2024 Global Summits in Bangkok.
Led by Adib Muttaki, the team includes Mohit Chowdhury (Research), Faijus Salehin Nafi (Operations), and Mohaimen Zaman (Finance). They focus on recycling polypropylene plastics into reinforced materials for eco-friendly furniture. The process involves collecting plastics, preparing and reinforcing them, extruding durable blocks, and assembling the final products.
“Our goal is to make furniture that is affordable, fashionable, and eco-friendly,” Adib shares. The team also plans to introduce a donation program to refurbish old furniture for underprivileged children.
While challenges like material sourcing and supply chain management remain, the team is optimistic about creating a sustainable brand that stands out in the market. Through hard work and innovation, these KUET students are turning waste into impactful solutions.
