Bangladesh has witnessed several internet shutdowns over the years, both on a national and regional level. These shutdowns, while varied in scope, have often violated basic human rights. In response, organizations like Activate Rights, alongside local and international human rights groups, have worked tirelessly to document these incidents, ensuring accountability and justice.
To take this effort further, Activate Rights has launched Bangladesh’s first-ever Internet Shutdown Dashboard, Shutdown Watch. This transparency tool allows activists, researchers, and journalists to access real-time information on internet shutdowns across the country. The dashboard is open to the public, making it a vital resource for anyone seeking data on digital rights infringements.
This tool was officially unveiled on August 18th at the Digital Rights in the Asia-Pacific (DRAPAC) Assembly held in Taiwan. It marks a significant step in promoting digital transparency and protecting citizens’ rights in Bangladesh.
