GangUP: A Safe and Affordable Commute Solution for University Students

GangUP app GangUP app

With the recent rise in nationwide incidents of robbery and assault, commuting alone — especially in the late afternoon or evening — has become a serious concern for students. To tackle this issue, a group of university innovators created GangUP, a web application designed to help students form travel groups (“Gangs”) for safer and more affordable commutes.

For many students, getting home safely after classes has become increasingly difficult. GangUP provides a solution by allowing students to connect with others who share similar routes and travel times. By commuting together, students can reduce safety risks and split transportation costs when using rideshare services like Uber or CNG.

Key Features of GangUP

GangUP makes it easy to organize group commutes:

  • Create or Join a Gang: Students can create a gang by selecting their departure location, destination, departure time, and group size. They can also join existing gangs that match their preferences.
  • University-Exclusive Access: The app is only accessible to students from the same university, adding an extra layer of safety and comfort. For example, BRACU students can only gang up with fellow BRACU students.
  • Gender-Specific Preferences: To enhance safety, users can choose to travel with companions of a specific gender. For instance, female students can opt to commute exclusively with other female students.

GangUP is continuously evolving to improve the user experience. Upcoming features include an in-app chat system for better coordination, a review system to help students choose reliable gang members, and a notification feature to invite nearby students to join a gang.

Currently, GangUP is available for students of BRACU, NSU, DIU, IUB, EWU, ULAB, UIU, SEU, and more. The team plans to add more universities based on public demand.

Behind the Scenes

GangUP is the result of the dedication and hard work of a passionate team, including Fahim Ahmed, Mahir Abdullah, Monish Chanda Rudra, and Shahriar Ahmed Shovon (DIU), whose lightning-fast coding skills played a huge role in bringing the app to life.

With GangUP, students no longer have to choose between safety and affordability. It’s more than just an app — it’s a community-driven platform that makes commuting safer, smarter, and more connected.
