Flash Floods Devastate Sherpur: Thousands Trapped in Two Upazila

Sherpur’s Jhenaigati and Nalitabari subdistricts have been hit by unexpected flash floods, leaving thousands trapped in low-lying areas. The Water Development Board reported that the water levels of the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers have risen significantly, surpassing danger levels by 525 cm and 56 cm, respectively. On Friday, the district recorded heavy rainfall, with 260 mm in Nakugaon, 225 mm in Nalitabari, and 177 mm in Sadar.

The flooding, which began after relentless downpours and an influx of water from the hills, submerged several areas, including Jhenaigati’s main market and seven unions. Similar conditions were seen in Nalitabari, where overflowing rivers flooded three unions and the municipal area. Most rural roads are underwater, and vast farmlands have been inundated, leaving many homes submerged in waist-deep water.

Local authorities are responding swiftly. Jhenaigati Upazila Executive Officer Md. Ashraful Alam Russell reported that nearly 800 people are stranded, with rescue teams from the Upazila administration and fire service working tirelessly to evacuate them. He added that dry food has been prepared for the affected, and there is hope that water levels will recede by evening.

Meanwhile, in Nalitabari, Upazila Executive Officer Masud Rana confirmed that the situation is dire in the villages of Poragaon, Ramchandrakura, and Nayabil, where water levels have risen to waist and neck height in some areas. Many have sought refuge in safer areas, while others remain stranded. Rescue operations are in full swing, and dry food distribution has begun. The water levels of the Bhogai and Chellakhali rivers continue to exceed danger levels.

The local administration and fire service are working around the clock to assist the affected communities.
