OpenAI has taken a significant step toward making ChatGPT more accessible by integrating it with WhatsApp. Starting today, users can simply add 1 (800) CHAT-GPT (that’s 1 (800) 242-8478) to their contacts to chat with the AI directly via Meta’s popular messaging app.
In this initial rollout, ChatGPT on WhatsApp supports text-only input, meaning advanced features like voice mode or visual input are not yet available. However, the chatbot retains all the functionalities of the o1-mini model, ensuring a seamless and intelligent conversational experience.
What’s even more exciting is that you can use ChatGPT on WhatsApp without needing an OpenAI account. Although OpenAI is working on a feature to authenticate existing users on WhatsApp, no timeline has been announced for its launch.
Additionally, OpenAI has introduced a ChatGPT hotline in the United States, accessible at the same toll-free number, 1 (800) 242-8478. The hotline works with any phone, from modern smartphones to old flip phones. Each user gets 15 minutes of free ChatGPT usage, with options to log into an account for extended access.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, shared during the company’s recent “12 Days of OpenAI” livestream, “We’re only just getting started on making ChatGPT more accessible to everyone.” The WhatsApp integration and hotline stem from a recent hack week at OpenAI, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation.
This move aligns with OpenAI’s broader efforts, including making ChatGPT Search available to free users and introducing Sora video generation. With Meta already offering its own chatbot within WhatsApp, the competition for conversational AI dominance is heating up.
