The government has given policy-level approval to a proposal for establishing a state-of-the-art green data center for Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) in Hathazari, Chattogram.
The proposal, submitted by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, received policy approval during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held on Thursday (April 17) at the Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Economic Affairs Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to meeting sources, the proposed green data center will be constructed on 149.48 acres of unused land owned by BTCL in the Fatikchhari Mouza area of Hathazari upazila. The project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
If implemented, the project is expected to attract foreign investment, create employment opportunities, and accelerate economic growth. Additionally, it will help BTCL increase revenue through data storage rentals while meeting domestic demand.
Following this policy-level approval, a feasibility study will be conducted to finalize the technical and financial aspects of the project. A private partner will be selected through an open bidding process, in accordance with the PPP guidelines. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has expressed interest in providing technical assistance and transaction advisory services for the project.
