Bangladesh has slipped further down the global happiness rankings, placing 134th out of 147 countries in the World Happiness Report 2025. This marks a decline from last year’s position of 129th out of 143 nations.
The annual report, released today, identifies Finland as the happiest country in the world. Meanwhile, Afghanistan remains the most unhappy, followed by Sierra Leone, Lebanon, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, DR Congo, and Yemen.
In South Asia, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka ranked 118th, 109th, 126th, and 133rd, respectively, while Nepal fared significantly better at 92nd.
The report also highlights the 20 happiest countries, including Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and the Netherlands, with Costa Rica being the only non-European nation in the top five.
Compiled using Gallup World Poll data from 2022-2024, the rankings are based on people’s life satisfaction evaluations and six key factors: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.
The study is a joint effort by Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and an expert editorial board.
