American Gymnast Jake Islam is ready to play Olympic as Bangladeshi

Bangladeshi-origin gymnast Jake Islam, a five-time state champion in Massachusetts, is preparing to represent Bangladesh in international gymnastics events, confirmed officials from the Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation on Wednesday.

Jake, born on September 23, 2005, in Springfield, Massachusetts, is currently a student at the University of Michigan, where he plays for the university’s main gymnastics team. Known for his strength in floor exercise, vault, and pommel horse, Jake has already made a name for himself in the U.S. gymnastics circuit, securing the state championship title five times between 2018 and 2023. He also competed in the USA Championships in 2022.

Jake’s father, Ashequl Islam, is of Bangladeshi origin, while his mother’s name is Melissa. The Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation has confirmed that steps have been taken to issue him a Bangladeshi passport, which would officially enable him to switch national allegiance.

“Jake has potential to be part of Bangladesh’s national team for the next Olympics in the USA, much like Syque Caesar,” said Habibur Rahman, General Secretary of the federation. Syque Caesar, another US-born gymnast of Bangladeshi descent, represented Bangladesh at the 2012 London Olympics.

Jake’s inclusion in the Bangladesh national team could mark a significant boost to the country’s gymnastics profile ahead of future international events, including the 2028 Summer Olympics.
