Amazon AWS CEO: Return to Office or Find Another Job

Amazon’s AWS CEO Matt Garman has taken a firm stance on the company’s upcoming return-to-office policy. In a recent all-hands meeting, Garman made it clear that employees who are not on board with the new five-day-per-week in-office mandate should consider seeking opportunities elsewhere.

Garman explained that most employees he has spoken with support the change, which is set to begin in January. “If there are people who don’t work well in that environment, that’s okay—there are other companies around,” Garman said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration for innovation.

This new directive has caused friction among Amazon employees, many of whom feel that the additional commuting time is unnecessary and that remote work is just as productive. Amazon previously enforced a three-day office work policy, but CEO Andy Jassy announced a shift to five days, citing the need for better team cohesion and creativity.

Some employees, who have not complied with the current office requirements, were labeled as “voluntarily resigning” and locked out of company systems. While many other tech giants like Google and Microsoft have maintained flexible hybrid work models, Amazon is taking a more rigid approach. Garman acknowledged that while not everyone is excited about the policy, the company’s long-term goals demand closer, in-person collaboration.

“When we were only in the office three days a week, we weren’t really working together or learning from each other,” Garman said. He highlighted how Amazon’s leadership principles, including “disagree and commit,” require a level of interaction that remote work doesn’t fully support.

With this policy, Amazon aims to foster an environment where employees can drive innovation and work together to achieve ambitious goals.
