Govt. Plans to End DU Affiliation of Seven Colleges

7 colleges

The government is set to take steps to end Dhaka University’s (DU) affiliation with seven public colleges, a move sparked by prolonged protests and dissatisfaction from students and the DU administration. The demand for autonomy has gained momentum, with students urging the establishment of an independent university for the seven colleges.

The affiliation, introduced in 2017 to improve academic standards, has faced criticism for being poorly planned. Students claim it failed to achieve its objectives, leading to administrative strain on DU and inadequate support for the colleges.

On November 5, representatives of the protesting students met with Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud, the interim government’s education advisor, who assured them of a potential solution. He emphasized the need for a standalone identity for the colleges and requested time to develop a viable framework.

Following the meeting, students temporarily suspended their protests but promised to resume if their demands are not met. A special committee will soon evaluate the feasibility of establishing an independent institution for the seven colleges.

While plans are underway, the question remains: how will this transformation shape the future of these colleges and their students?
